Pergolas
Hot summers leave North Carolinians seeking shade in all forms. Pergolas are a popular option for southern homes because they provide shade while leaving room for much-needed cool breezes. Many homeowners choose to add flowering climbing vines to their pergolas. Read on to learn the benefits of pergolas and the various choices you can make when selecting what will work best for your home.
Benefits
- Outdoor structures define an outdoor living space.
- Open roofs or rafters filter the light coming through.
- Provide much-needed shade for the hot summer months.
- Provide air flow so breezes can travel through the structure.
- Electrical hookups available to allow for lighting and fans.
- Offer an opportunity for flowering climbing vines.
- Provide visual interest to an outdoor living area.
Types of Pergolas
- Freestanding: Freestanding pergolas stand alone providing structure to your garden, pool, or any other outdoor living area you are looking to define.
- Attached: Attached pergolas attach to your home. These are most commonly found as a cover for an existing deck or patio.
- Louvered: Louvered pergolas have moveable louvers to allow for more or less sunlight filtering through. They are available in manual and automatic models.
- Awning: Not all pergolas have to be grand in scale. Awning style pergolas can add architectural interest and needed shade to entry doors, windows and garage doors.
Materials
- Wood: Wood is the most common and the most affordable material for pergolas. Once you decide on wood, it is important to discuss which type of wood will work best to fit your needs. Factors to consider include durability, frequency of staining the wood, and cost. Generally speaking, the more you spend on your material up front, the less you spend over time in maintenance.
- Vinyl: Lower maintenance than wood but much higher in up-front costs. Typically, maintenance includes power washing periodically.
- Aluminum: Aluminum pergolas are a popular option for modern landscapes. They can also be cleaned with a periodic power washing and do not require staining or painting.
- Steel: Similar to aluminum, steel pergolas provide a modern look, but they offer a more industrial feel. They provide added durability, but they are susceptible to rust and corrosion.
- Fiberglass: Fiberglass pergolas offer the most convenience (low-maintenance, weather resistant, long-lasting, and can paint any color), but it is also the most expensive.
- Concrete: Concrete pergolas give a nod to ancient Roman and Greek architecture, and can last forever with periodic cleaning and chip/crack repairs.
