How a Front Yard Became the Perfect Outdoor Living Space with Custom Hardscaping

When homeowners start thinking about upgrading their outdoor space, it often begins with a single issue—and grows into something much more impactful. That was exactly the case with this Cary hardscaping project at a classic Tudor-style home.

Starting with a Failing Driveway

The project began with a cracked, aging concrete driveway that had reached the end of its useful life. Fortunately, the retaining wall supporting the end of the driveway remained structurally sound, allowing us to focus entirely on replacing the driveway surface.

We removed the existing concrete and installed a new concrete driveway, carefully grading the area to ensure proper drainage. Establishing the correct slope was essential for directing water away from the driveway and helping protect the adjacent retaining wall from future erosion or water-related issues.

Reworking the Front Yard Experience

With the driveway complete, attention turned to transforming the front yard into a more functional and inviting space.

The original layout featured a standard concrete walkway leading from the driveway to a small covered brick porch, surrounded by a natural area with mature shrubs. To open up the space and create new possibilities, we removed the walkway, cleared the plantings, and regraded the area in preparation for the new design.

A custom-built pergola became the centerpiece of the project, creating a dedicated outdoor gathering space where the homeowners can relax, entertain, and enjoy their front yard. Two decorative lattice panels were incorporated into the structure and carefully positioned to provide visual interest while preserving views from the home’s existing windows. The pergola also introduces a strong architectural element that complements the Tudor-style character of the house.

To connect the space, we installed a large flagstone patio and walkway system that completely redefines how the front yard functions. The walkway begins with a narrower section near the driveway, then gradually widens as it approaches the pergola, opening into a spacious patio area. This creates an outdoor living space that extends to the front entrance and feels naturally connected to the home. Stone edging along the perimeter provides a clean, finished look. We also preserved a natural area between the patio and the home, maintaining a soft transition with existing landscaping for added balance and visual contrast.

The result is a layered design that improves circulation, adds visual depth, and transforms what was once a simple front entry into a true extension of the home’s living space.

Curved Gravel Pathway for Added Character

To further enhance both accessibility and visual interest, we installed a long, curved gravel pathway with clean metal edging. This path connects the front patio to the far end of the driveway, guiding movement through the expansive yard while introducing a softer, more natural contrast to the stone and concrete elements.

The gentle curve helps break up the linear layout, making the space feel more organic and inviting—an important design element in high-quality hardscaping in Cary, NC.
