For our latest new patio in Apex, NC, we hauled out 31,000 lbs. of material before we even began! Though the homeowners had a small patio, they wanted an expanded patio with room for an outdoor kitchen, firepit and a hot tub. Because their existing patio was almost touching the siding of the home and partially covering the crawl space vents, an overlay was not an option so the existing concrete had to be removed. After we began the demolition process, we learned that the existing patio was laid on top of another concrete patio. After removing it all, we dropped the finished height by 14” giving us plenty of room to install a paver patio that meets all of their needs. Read on to learn details of the robust new patio in Apex, NC.
Patio Details
When it comes to installing a new patio, there are countless options to choose from. We worked with the homeowners to select the following options that best met their needs while achieving the desired function:
- Patio pavers: Techo-bloc Blu 60 Smooth Finish in Champlain Grey
- Patio border: Techo-bloc Blu 60 Onyx Black in 6”X13”
- Walls: Techo-bloc Graphix in Onyx Black
- Caps: Techo-bloc Raffinato in Shale Grey
Outdoor Kitchen
In the outdoor kitchen, we couldn’t install the Graphix wall in its standard configuration because of the cabinets, so we created a custom pattern to compliment the Graphix wall while enabling the installation of cabinets and drawers. We worked with the homeowners to select the following features for the outdoor kitchen:
- Granite countertop
- Bull cabinets and storage drawers
- Napoleon grill plumbed for natural gas
- Blackstone pizza oven
- Built in storage for propane tank under the pizza oven with propane quick connect
Pergola
We always save what we can. In this case, the pergola itself was in great condition, but the pergola posts needed to be replaced because of the height change. For each post, we braced the pergola, removed the old post, removed the old concrete, and installed a new post set in new concrete. With a new foundation, the original pergola will stand for many years to come!
Hot Tub
Installing a hot tub is significantly more involved than placing a hot tub on a concrete pad. We reinforced the concrete (6” thick) so it could hold the increased weight, had it bonded by an electrician and ran power 24” beneath.
Finishing Touches
When it’s all said and done, hardscaping projects need the finishing touches only landscaping can provide. In this project, we provided the following finishing touches:
- Framed the hot tub and patio with plant installations
- Laid a mulch border around each wall
- Installed plants framing the stairs
- Laid sod on the lawn area
- Defined the playground area with framing and mulch
- Installed ledge lights under the caps and steps
- Mounted down firing lights from the pergola for the outdoor kitchen
