Set behind a stately three-story colonial brick home overlooking the golf course, the property is tucked into a gentle hillside with a walk-out basement that opens naturally to the landscape—an exceptional setting for a thoughtfully designed, custom patio in Holly Springs.
The original backyard setup included a second-story wood deck and a basement-level floating deck that had reached the end of its useful life. While the upper deck was reimagined with a beautiful Trex deck (featured in a previous post), the homeowners wanted a more functional, expansive footprint on the lower level. The solution: a multi-level stone patio in Holly Springs with a fireplace that seamlessly connects to the walk-out basement.
Reworking the Landscape: Excavation, Grading, and Structural Support
Transforming the patio footprint into a functional stone living space began well below the surface. Extensive excavation and precision grading were required to reshape the site, establish accurate elevations, and create a stable foundation for the entire hardscape system. Soil was strategically added and reworked to level the area while preserving positive drainage away from the home—an essential step for long-term performance, durability, and erosion control.
With the grades properly established, we constructed architectural retaining walls, using Techo-Bloc Mini-Creta in Champlain Gray, to define the footprint and support the surrounding landscape. These walls serve a critical structural purpose, retaining soil, managing water movement, and reinforcing the slope so the patio could be built with confidence and longevity in mind.
Paver Design with Techo-Bloc Blu 60 Slabs
Once the structural elements were in place, we installed the main patio surface using Techo-Bloc Blu 60 slabs. Known for their architectural scale, subtle texture, and exceptional durability, these large-format pavers create a clean, contemporary layout. Their consistent proportions deliver a refined, modern aesthetic while offering the reliability and performance of concrete with the appearance of natural stone.
An inlaid accent border frames the patio, adding definition and a tailored finish that visually anchors the space. With the retaining walls supporting the landscape and the patio built on a meticulously prepared base, the finished design feels cohesive, intentional, and fully integrated into the backyard—never imposed on it.
Fire Pit Feature and Gathering Spaces
A decorative circular landing extends from the main patio, creating a focal point within the overall layout. Framed by the same accent border, this space centers around a custom stone fire pit designed to encourage evening gatherings and relaxed outdoor living. Surrounding retaining seat walls manage subtle changes in elevation while providing ample built-in seating, seamlessly blending form and function. Together, these elements establish a warm, inviting centerpiece for this Holly Springs patio.
Multi-Level Transitions and Site Flow
This patio unfolds across multiple levels, thoughtfully guiding movement from the Trex deck above down into the stone living space below. A stone landing at the base of the deck stairs provides a smooth transition, followed by a short set of steps leading into the main patio.
On the left side of the patio, stone stairs descend to a connecting walkway that leads to an additional circular landing and a second set of stairs. These now connect to newly constructed Trex stairs that provide access to a deck extending toward the driveway. We expanded the deck to accommodate the home’s trash receptacles discreetly, keeping them tucked behind the house and out of view from the driveway.
With entrance stairs on both sides of the patio, access to the backyard living area is effortless and convenient. By connecting each level with intention, the design significantly improves circulation and flow, resulting in an outdoor living space that feels both luxurious and highly functional.
