Whether you’re just joining us or have been following our journey, this five-part series chronicles the transformation of a backyard in Cary, NC, from what began as a request to fix muddy dog runs that turned into an extensive outdoor transformation.
In Part 1, we began by addressing the homeowners’ concern over muddy dog runs, which led to the discovery of significant drainage issues affecting the entire backyard. In Part 2, we implemented a comprehensive drainage solution, including an epoxy pebble walkway to intercept runoff and raised paver borders to define natural areas and manage water flow.

Now, in Part 3, we turn our attention to the patio area. While the existing patio appeared promising from a distance, closer inspection revealed underlying issues. As an experienced patio contractor in Cary, NC, we identified several problems: uneven stones, separating joints, and runoff from the sloped side yard that had been slowly undermining the base beneath.
A patio isn’t just a place to relax—it’s a structural system that must endure pressure from foot traffic, outdoor furniture, water exposure, and seasonal shifts. Unfortunately, the original install lacked the engineering needed to withstand these demands. So we went back to square one.
Starting Over the Right Way
In hardscaping, the most important work often happens below the surface. We began by removing the old stones and excavating the area to evaluate the sub-base. What we found confirmed our suspicions: weak compaction, uneven settling, and visible signs of erosion caused by long-term water intrusion.
To rebuild properly, we took a multi-layered approach designed for performance. Our team:
- Excavated and regraded the entire area to direct runoff away from the home and pool
- Enlarged the patio footprint to create a more functional outdoor living space
- Installed geotextile fabric to prevent soil migration and improve base stability
- Added a new crushed stone base (ABC aggregate), compacted in layers for strength and permeability
- Topped the crushed stone base with a bedding layer of fine gravel to support precise paver placement
- Laid durable bluestone pavers in a custom, multi-size pattern to add depth and interest
The result? A foundation built to withstand the elements and deliver lasting strength beneath your feet—crafted by an experienced patio contractor.
Drainage Still Leads the Design
Even though most drainage challenges were addressed earlier in the project, water management continued to shape every construction decision. We incorporated a subtle slope—typically between 1–2%—to guide water away from the pool and direct it toward turf and natural areas designed for absorption. These thoughtful details ensure water flows where it should—without detracting from the overall design.
Pattern and Precision with Bluestone Pavers

The new patio showcases a refined layout of bluestone slabs carefully chosen for their natural textures, rich blue-gray hues, and unique character. Bluestone is a popular choice for outdoor spaces because it offers a timeless, natural look that blends beautifully with a variety of landscape styles. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, bluestone is known for its excellent durability—able to withstand harsh weather conditions without cracking or fading over time. Bluestone’s naturally textured surface helps prevent slipping, even when wet.
Careful spacing between the stones ensures proper drainage while maintaining stability and reducing future shifting. Edge restraints and thorough compaction secure the installation firmly in place. With open green space nearby, water has multiple paths to exit gently, rather than pooling on the surface.
More Than a Fix—A Foundation for the Future
Rebuilding the surface wasn’t just about correcting previous mistakes. It was about delivering a structure the homeowners could count on—one that aligned with their pool design, elevated their outdoor living experience, and promised years of use with minimal maintenance.
As a trusted patio contractor in Cary, NC, we take pride in building hardscapes that do more than look good—they perform. With this section of the project complete, we were ready to move into the next phase: expanding the deck and continuing to build toward a cohesive, elevated outdoor living space—one thoughtful step at a time.
