When a homeowner in Cary, NC aimed to convert a portion of her front yard into a carport for her Tesla, she encountered significant project setbacks. Inspired by the need for a charging station, the project initially seemed straightforward but quickly turned challenging, requiring the expertise of Hardscapes of Holly Springs.
The project began with another company that poured the concrete driveway and started constructing the retaining wall. Unfortunately, they couldn’t secure the necessary permits to proceed. Their diagonal design was not functional for parking a car, and the retaining wall collapsed within 30 days, adding to the homeowner’s frustrations.
Innovative Solutions: A Freestanding Pergola Carport
Realizing the need for a more reliable solution, the homeowner consulted with Hardscapes of Holly Springs. During the consultation, they decided to change directions and opted for a freestanding pergola which in Cary, does not require permits. With power already in place, Hardscapes of Holly Springs seamlessly integrated the Tesla charger into the new design.
The front yard had a steep upward slope, so the team began by rebuilding the retaining wall into the hill. We built stairs into the left side of the retaining wall to give the homeowner direct access from the carport to a wooden plank walkway leading to the front door. This thoughtful design allowed her to pass through the retaining wall instead of constantly walking around it.
Next, the team constructed a stunning freestanding pergola with horizontal slatted planks on the back and sides. This design created a more enclosed space, giving the pergola a carport-like feel. The slatted planks also served as a safety fence, addressing the varying elevations of the yard around the retaining wall and reducing the risk of falls. This innovative design not only fulfilled the homeowner’s aesthetic preferences but also resolved the practical challenges of the previous attempts.
A Successful Transformation
The result was a private, shaded carport area with functional access to the front porch entryway. This pergola in Cary not only provided the necessary charging station for the Tesla but also enhanced the overall functionality and aesthetics of the homeowner’s front yard.
