Nestled in a picturesque neighborhood, this stunning house seemed to have it all. From its inviting front yard and level driveway to the secluded backyard with a charming screened porch, every feature exuded potential for idyllic living. However, a subtle yet significant challenge loomed over this otherwise perfect setting: the natural slope of the backyard terrain. Though the home’s design was adeptly integrated with the landscape, the steep decline created a precarious pathway, posing a safety risk for those attempting direct backyard access.
Crafting a Vision:
To overcome this challenge, our team envisioned a transformative solution. Our plan was simple yet ambitious: to add a stunning masonry staircase to the existing retaining wall, creating a safe and elegant pathway from the front yard to the back. A large paver patio and an additional section of retaining wall adjacent to the driveway would serve as an elegant transition to the new masonry stairs.
Executing with Precision:
The front of the house boasted beautiful stone accents, inspiring our approach to this masonry staircase in Holly Springs. We covered the existing brick retaining wall with stone pavers that seamlessly matched the house’s stone facade. However, to reliably adhere the stone to the painted brick, a new base layer was needed. So we added a metal lath to enhance strength and applied a concrete scratch coating to ensure optimal masonry adhesion. When concrete dries, the reason for its strong bond is because it creates crystals as it cures creating “mechanical locks” throughout the structure.
Crafting the Masterpiece:
Building upon this foundation, we expertly crafted a new masonry staircase and an additional section of retaining wall, seamlessly integrating them into the existing landscape. Additionally, we added a stone paver patio adjacent to the existing concrete driveway leading to the staircase. We preserved the existing railing, skillfully reinstalling it onto the newly improved stone wall, maintaining both functionality and aesthetic continuity.
Transforming Possibilities:
With phase one of the backyard transformation complete, our project provided needed accessibility while adding style and dimension to the landscape. While the masonry staircase in Holly Springs project was a huge success, phase two promises even more excitement, with plans for a walkway, patio and fire pit.
