What Goes Into Building a Patio That Lasts

When homeowners start thinking about adding a patio in Holly Springs, they naturally focus on the finished design. What often goes unseen is the engineering that allows the structure to perform flawlessly year after year.

We recently built a custom paver patio in Holly Springs that showcases exactly what goes into building an outdoor space designed for long-term durability. From proper grading to structural support and drainage, every step was carefully planned to ensure it will stand up to North Carolina’s changing seasons.

Starting with the Site

This project took place at a beautiful two-story home in one of Holly Springs’ newer neighborhoods. The home featured a ground-level screened porch built on a concrete slab, and the homeowners wanted to extend that space with a large paver patio that felt like a natural continuation of their home. One of their top priorities was creating a smooth, step-free transition from the screened porch onto the patio.

Before construction began, we evaluated the property’s grade to determine the ideal finished elevation. Grade—the change in elevation across the property—plays a critical role in how the structure is built. It impacts excavation depth, base thickness, drainage patterns, and overall structural performance.

The Foundation You Never See

While the finished pavers are what most people notice, the true strength of any hardscape lies beneath the surface.

We began with proper excavation, removing the existing organic soil—containing grass, roots, and other materials that naturally decompose and shift over time—to reach a stable subgrade. Reaching a stable subgrade is essential for preventing settling and uneven surfaces later on.

Next, we installed a high-quality aggregate base designed to provide both structural support and effective drainage. The base was installed in multiple compacted layers, a process that increases density, eliminates air pockets, and creates a solid foundation capable of supporting the patio for decades.

This step is especially important when building a patio in Holly Springs and the Piedmont area as a whole, where clay-heavy soils expand during wet conditions and contract during dry periods. A properly compacted base helps minimize movement and ensures long-term stability.

Drainage Is Part of the Design

Effective drainage is built into every successful outdoor living space.

We designed the surface with a precise pitch to guide water safely away from the home. At the same time, the permeable base layers allow water to move through the system rather than becoming trapped beneath the surface.

Without proper drainage, even a beautiful patio can experience erosion, shifting, and long-term structural issues.

Structural Support Where It Matters

To create the desired step-free transition from the porch, portions of the patio were elevated. This required additional structural support to maintain stability.

We constructed a curved retaining wall that also functions as a built-in seating wall. While it adds visual appeal and practical seating, its structural role is critical.

The retaining wall holds back soil, stabilizes the raised areas, and reinforces the integrity of the foundation. It also serves as a permanent edge restraint, helping keep the paver system securely in place over time.

Bringing the Design Together

With the structural elements complete, we turned our attention to the design details that make this patio in Holly Springs truly stand out.

The homeowners selected a contemporary paver system featuring multiple tones and sizes of pavers arranged in a clean, geometric pattern. A contrasting border frames the patio, creating definition and a polished transition between spaces.

To add a focal point, we incorporated a decorative flagstone inlay circle that extends beyond the main footprint. Along the curved edge, the custom seat wall provides both structural support and a welcoming place for guests to gather. The result is a space that blends form and function—where engineering and design work seamlessly together.
