What began as a request to fix muddy dog runs quickly became one of the most rewarding transformations we’ve ever had the privilege to complete.
It all started with a simple request for hardscaping in Cary, NC, to address a problem many pet owners will recognize: the family’s dogs had created well-worn paths through the backyard where grass refused to grow. The homeowners were tired of muddy paws and asked us to create a walkway in those high-traffic areas. But as soon as we stepped onto the property, we realized the problem ran deeper—literally.
What looked like a luxury backyard retreat was hiding a major problem: significant drainage issues had gone unaddressed for too long. Water from the neighbor’s yard would naturally drain into their yard (due to a natural slope) and was pooling at the jacuzzi and pouring into the pool carrying debris. A stone patio connected to the pool and jacuzzi had patio stones that were no longer level and showing signs of shifting and erosion. Instead of a relaxing oasis, the yard had become a constant battle against recurring runoff issues.
After we shared our assessment, the homeowners asked us to move forward with a comprehensive solution—one that tackled not just the muddy trouble spots, but the underlying drainage issues compromising the entire backyard. As the problems were brought under control, the homeowners began to reclaim their space. And with that regained control came renewed inspiration. What began as a simple walkway project soon evolved into a full-scale transformation, with new ideas taking shape at every stage.
A Full Outdoor Living Makeover
By the time spring arrived, this once-soggy backyard had been completely reimagined. In fact, the transformation extended beyond the backyard. We freshened up the front yard by carefully trimming bushes, adding new flowering plants, spreading fresh pine straw, and installing low-voltage uplighting to boost curb appeal. The homeowners were left with a beautifully unified landscape—functional, inviting, and ready to enjoy from every angle.
Highlights from the completed project:
- Epoxy pebble and stone walkway to manage dog traffic and improve water absorption
- Comprehensive drainage redesign to redirect runoff and protect both the home and pool
- Natural bluestone patio built for strength, beauty, and long-term durability
- Expansive TimberTech deck connecting three separate home entrances on one level
- Custom outdoor gas fireplace with mounted TV, perfect for year-round entertaining
- Modern bluestone slab step stones + artificial turf installation for a sleek look and low-maintenance finish
- Raised garden beds that define natural areas and prevent soil erosion
